The Curriculum is an area of major Governmental discussion and initiative at the moment.  Changes have been made to the National Qualifications system by the introduction of the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA), which reflects the need of many students to extend their secondary education and to obtain different or higher qualifications.

While the full impact of Government initiatives may not be felt for some years, the general trend of such moves - an emphasis on basic learning skills, an emphasis on core curriculum areas, and an emphasis on standards and achievement - all fit readily with the College's existing philosophy and structures.

Fiordland College offers a Curriculum framework which:

Gives students a firm grounding in the basic areas of Language, Mathematics and Science through

  1. An emphasis on Language in the Home Room and Junior School.
  2. Combining / regrouping of Junior Mathematics classes to allow for more intensive teaching.
  3. The use of Cultural activities such as Drama, Debating and Public Speaking to reinforce Language skills.
  4. The splitting of Science and Mathematics in the Senior School into its composite courses of
  5. Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics (Calculus) and Mathematics (Statistics).
  6. Offers a range of optional subjects that provides suitable course structures for students of all abilities.
  7. Provides a Distance Education facility for Internet, Audio-Graphics and Audio-Communication.

 

  • Caters for students who wish to “multi-level” by undertaking subjects at different year levels in the Senior School.
  • Encourages sporting and cultural involvement.
  • Pursues excellence through a policy of promoting individual success at all levels.
